Individual images of the plaques can be seen in the slideshow. The Wall of Tears Memorial contains a map of Europe showing the Jewish population in each country, before and after the Holocaust. In each country, there are one or more plaques that contain an image and story of events that occurred in that place. It is a means of telling the story of the Holocaust. The memorial features an eternal flame at the top of the monument and dripping tears that emerge from behind the plaques. 6,000,000 tears drip and collect in a Pool of Tears every week as a means of drawing in and sensitizing the viewer. But the plaques tell of the experiences of communities and their families in Europe from 1938 to 1945. The three dozen engraved plaques, offset from the face of the map, contain engraved photos and several sentences describing samples of deportation, extermination, concentration and massacre sites in countries from across Europe. The images and facts were derived from the archives of Yad Vashem, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and 45,000 images and studies from libraries around the world. The side panels talk about antisemitism, discrimination and the Holocaust with the hope that it can be built in places where the damage caused by antisemitism and the resulting holocaust has apparently been all but forgotten. |
